Frequently Asked Questions
What is this about?
Requiem: Reichskinder is about a fictional Czechoslovak institute for problematic youth after WW2. It is about searching for one’s identity, coping with the past and about experiencing a tense time for people who have been part of war which has ended where their issues have not.
Why should you play it?
Next to a set of interesting themes and a thought-provoking setting, the game offers a wide array of narrative tools and mechanics to help further these stories. Drama therapies give the players agency over the reality of their characters. Accelerated time allows the story to progress more fast paced. An unique aspect are the Special Friends - characters and monsters coming from your past, your memories, your innermost fear. They usually can’t be seen by the staff or anyone who is not subject to them.
Overall, Requiem: Reichskinder creates a surreal atmosphere where the reality the players and characters see is not always easy to comprehend or to sort.
What will you do at the game?
Every character in the game underlies a tight schedule. You’ll have fixed therapy sessions, be subjected to various treatments, all of which serve as spaces to create play - you might be locked in a room with your rival for 20 minutes. Outside the schedule, characters will meet in one of the many corners of the location to scheme, disrupt or play on their relationships.
At night, the special friends might wrench you from your sleep to show you visions, give opportunities for development or put tough choices before you.
What do you need to play?
Before the game, you’ll get access to the design doc as well as your player character. You have to read through your character and internalise it as best as possible. Other than that, you don’t need anything. You’ll get a full costume on site as well as access to a military bunk bed (you do need to bring your own sleeping gear).
What happens if you get overwhelmed during the experience?
There are several methods at your disposal, depending on your situation. Safety techniques allow you to step out of a scene and communicate to your co-players off game. A dedicated off game room gives you a break from your character as well as access to an organiser if you need help. Last but not least, there are dedicated safety people on the team who can help you with any safety situation.
How will you sleep?
You will sleep in a large common room on provided military bunk beds. Due to the accelerated time, you’ll get 2 nights of 4 hours of rest time - however, the game is not stopped in that time and some characters will get additional scenes in the nights.
What kind of hygiene facilities are at the venue?
As the game is played in an old historical building, facilities are very restricted. There are no showers and no hot water. There is a wash room with big basins and cold water and there are portable toilets just outside the venue.
Is it a historically accurate WWII game?
No, this game is set in 1945 in Czechoslovakia but it’s not a re-enactment of historical events. The setting only helps to narrate the stories but the game is supposed to be surreal, dreamy and mysterious, not historically realistic.
How are nazi symbols handled?
No real-world symbols are used in the game, there will be different, special symbols.
How much agency do you have about the fate of your character? Is this game very railroaded?
Some aspects of the game are clearly defined - your character, their relationships and their core struggle. In addition to this, during play some things might come up in the in-game therapy sessions - these are written down in files the therapists have. You will get to make clear “breakthrough choices” that further the development of your character. This is not a sandbox experience, so you can’t make everything happen to your character, but you are in control of their fate and their actual reality.
How is gender and age handled?
In this experience, anyone can play any character, no matter if their real world age or gender fits them or not. Players of all gender identities are welcome. However, the characters themselves are traditionally gendered as it is a theme for some parts of the game. When playing a character, you should make sure that they are discernible as belonging to that gender as it would've been in that time.
Furthermore, the game's world is one in which binary heteronormativity is the absolute norm. If not otherwise noted, characters will not be of other sexuality than heterosexual (since it should be a topic for characters that are pre-written with different sexuality).
